Artist / Group Information: J'miah Nabawi is a multi-faceted performance storyteller. He has often served as Cultural Ambassador and Host at various venues presenting children's programs for educational entertainment for culturally diverse family audiences. Bi-lingual in Spanish and a poly-glot of sorts, J'miah's culturally enriched programs are evident of his experience with immigrant communities and capacity to bring people together through the common language of storytelling. J’miah is also an esteemed recipient of the"ORACLE Award for Outstanding Service and Leadership, Southeast Region," awarded by the National Storytelling Network (NSN), Jonesborough, TN.
Artist Education / Training Background: My professional storytelling and teaching artist career began in 1986 as an apprentice and protegé of internationally acclaimed traveling storyteller and best-selling author, Linda Goss, the "Official Storyteller of Philadelphia." Traditionally learning the dynamics of interactive storytelling, ring games, and music-making happened while growing up in a musical family in Philadelphia (PA) and sets the stage as my early beginnings in the performing arts. Traditional Ghanaian Anansesem (Ananse stories) and their Mmoguo, traditional recreational folktale songs and rhythmic patterns, with hand-clapping patterns were gained through study and apprenticeships with world-renown Ghanaian ethnomusicologist/storyteller, Dr. Kwasi (Mugafu) Aduonum. Master Ghanaian drummer, Kwasi Asare was a guest in my home for several years. I began my extended learning in Teaching Artist seminars and mentorship as a roster "artist-partner" with Character Through The Arts (CTTA), a U. S. Department of Education No Child Left Behind Act grant partnership with PIONEER RESA and Kennesaw State University (Kennesaw, GA). I have also been a participant in The Kennedy Center's "Artists as Educators" seminars hosted by South Carolina Arts Commission when it was held in Charleston, SC one year.
